“Look at the sky. We are not alone. The whole universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream and work.” – A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
Are you ready to take your knitting experience out of this world?! We are headed over the moon with this mystery knit that was designed to be unlike anything you’ve found on Earth! This opulent wrap takes inspiration from stars, galaxies, outer space, and everything else the universe has to offer. The knitalong fun will take place on Ravelry and Instagram. Click here to share your colors, ask your questions, and connect with other knitters all over the world. It’s time to reach for the stars!
What to expect:
unique construction
lace
bias knitting
cables
slipped stitches
color changes
All techniques with charts will also include written instructions. I’ve created tutorial videos to guide you through any new techniques. There will NOT be any stranded colorwork or brioche. This design is intended for intermediate knitters, but my patterns and tutorials are designed to guide adventurous beginner skills to the next level. The best part of a KAL… there will be lots of helpful knitters to take you under their wing!
Finished dimensions:
??? (See my previous MKAL wraps to get an idea of the general size and shape it could be: Garden Variety, Just Beachy, Mountain Musings, Secret Forest, and Wings of Wonder)
Astro-Knot Supplies:
Needles:
Two sets of US 5 (3.75 mm) needles (or as required to meet gauge); 32” / 80 cm, 40” / 100 cm, or similar length recommended
NOTE: In place of a second set of gauge needles, you can use needles of a smaller gauge, an extra cable, or scrap yarn. Interchangeable needles are particularly useful for this knit.) I recommend choosing gauge needles based on the Swatching Guide (included as a separate pdf with pattern purchase) and/or the needles used on my previous MKAL wraps.
Gauge:
BLOCKED: 20 sts and 40 rows = 4”/10cm in garter stitch after wet-blocking and pinning
UNBLOCKED: 24 sts and 48 rows = 4”/10cm in garter stitch before blocking
(NOTE: Gauge is not crucial, but it will affect finished dimensions and yardage)
Notions:
Required: 2 stitch markers, 2 cable needles (or paperclip, toothpick, or double pointed needle to use for cables), and tapestry needle
Optional: 22 stitch markers (for repeats), blocking wires, pins, and mats (see my recommendations)
Yarn Requirements:
MC: 800 yds / 732 m fingering weight yarn
C1-7: 133 yds / 122 m fingering weight yarn in EACH of 7 colors
The sample for this design used Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply in ‘Cosmic Connections’, though other dyers have created kits to give you LOTS of options (see the full list here). This project also works great with stash and leftover yarns! Included in your pattern is a section on ‘Curating Your Own Kit’ with suggestions for compiling your own palette.
